Dependency on cell phones is growing at an alarming pace in our world of wireless technology and the debate on the biological effects of exposure to cell phone EMF radiation has become a topic of interest for scientific research.
The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord carries signals back and forth between the brain and nerves and controls most functions of the body and mind.
This study sets out to find a possible link between exposure of cell phone radiation and central nervous system disorders. Statistically significant data of vertigo, dizziness, and headaches were found to be associated with cell phone use.
Another journal study by South Korean researchers compiled the collective assumptions of EMF health effects to the Central Nervous System. Various neurological effects may arise as a result of RF-EMF exposure due to the proximity of the cranial nervous system (nerves that emerge directly from the brain) during cellular phone use. Such effects of EMF on health include headaches, changes in sleep habits, and changes in blood pressure. Moreover, exposure to RadioFrequency EMFs might affect cognitive function such as spatial learning and memory loss in humans.
When Cell phones are placed against the head – vulnerable brain tissues are exposed to the potentially harmful effects of EMF. The EMF frequencies emitted by cell phones are absorbed into the brain to such an extent that it can affect the activity of neurons.
Glucose (Sugar) is the major oxidative fuel for the brain. Rich in nerve cells and neurons – the brain is the most energy-demanding organ – using one-half of all the sugar energy in the body.
A study conducted by Dr Nora Volkow from the National Institutes of Health found that Glucose metabolism in the brain that was exposed to RF-EMF increased rapidly, indicating that the brain is sensitive to the effects of RF-EMF exposure.
The immune system is the body's defence system, comprising of many biological structures and processes that protect against diseases. An immune response is triggered to defend against foreign pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi, which could cause diseases and serious problems to the body.
EMFs disturb immune function through stimulation of various allergic and inflammatory responses, as well as effects on tissue repair processes. Chronic exposure of EMF radiation damages the biological processes of cell damage and oxidative stress, DNA fragmentation, and neurological changes, which will ultimately affect the immune system.
The antioxidant defence system controls the formation of free radicals and prevents diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease and macular degeneration.
Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. This report demonstrates that EMF exposure triggers oxidative stress in various tissues and causes significant changes in levels of blood antioxidant markers. It was also suggested that various antioxidants such as vitamin E, Melatonin, and Folic Acid may be used to prevent the potential adverse effects of exposure to EMF.
The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulates a variety of bodily functions such as metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things. It is made up of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, and reproductive system in both sexes.
Even though studies on EMF health effects on the endocrine system are scarce, however, there have been a number of researches that concur the impact of EMF radiation on Pineal Melatonin levels. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, which plays a significant role in physiological functions and regulates the body's sleep-wake cycle.
Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) has significant disruption on Pineal Melatonin levels by sensing EMF as a light source and subsequently decreases the melatonin production of the human body.
There is evidence that melatonin suppresses the development of certain tumours and has anticancer efficacy. Melatonin is preventive against oxidation disorders of nerve cells, detoxifies carcinogens, protects and repairs cellular DNA damage. Therefore, Melatonin is highly regarded for the prevention and treatment of cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer.
The reproductive system is the genital system made up of all the anatomical organs involved in sexual reproduction. Cell Phones are usually kept in the pockets, leaving our reproductive system continuously exposed to the EMF radiation emitted by cell phones.
In the ovaries of the female reproductive system, an ovarian follicle is a fluid-filled sac that contains an immature egg, or oocyte. These follicles are found in the ovaries. During ovulation, a mature egg is released from a follicle.
The following two studies on female rats associate infertility with EMF exposure. The first study on female rats, there was a significant decrease in the number of ovarian follicles in rats exposed to Electromagnetic radiation. While the second study shows that EMF radiation increased the harmful effects on the formation of ovarian follicles and oocytes implantation, resulting in decreased ovarian reserve leading to infertility.
A study paper compiled various scientific researches and journals on this topic and concluded that EMF exposure alters the reproductive endocrine hormones, gonadal function, embryonic development, pregnancy, and fetal development.
Many women are exposed to different types of radiation either to everyday life (e.g. televisions, cell phones, computer devices, occupational equipment) or for medical diagnostic and therapy with exposure to ionizing EMF radiation made of charged particles, X-rays, and gamma-rays.
Cell phones emit radiofrequency radiation (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas. This research shows that non-ionizing EMF radiation correlates with higher miscarriage rates and birth defects.
Abortion rate and an increased number of birth defects have been found with non-ionizing EMF exposure to video display terminals (computer screens).
Environmental, health, and lifestyle are among the factors that contribute to infertility in men. Many studies and researches have been done to clearly show that radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) have damaging effects on sperm (Apoptosis, morphology, motility, and sperm count)
This Study concludes that EMF radiation induces oxidative stress which may lead to infertility and that EMF exposure negatively affects sperm quality.
Aside from infertility, it was assumed that RF-EMF exposure might induce DNA damage due to increased oxidative stress, which may accelerate death in healthy sperm cells and promote testicular cancer formation.
With regards to male hormones, Testosterone is essential for spermatogenesis, the formation of development of sperm cells in men. In a controlled study on animals, it was found that EMF exposure results in a decline in the level of testosterone. Low levels of testosterone result in poor sexual health, difficulty sleeping, decrease in energy levels, and changes in mood swings.
Many studies have proven that there are serious effects of EMF exposure on the human body. However, due to the non-standardization of EMF variables, there may be some controversies. Nonetheless, these potential EMF health risks should be made known to the public.
