The 5G Evolution

The evolution of wireless communication has been extraordinary throughout the years. In 2001, 3G Network becomes available, almost seven years before the first iPhone ever launched; and in 2007, the 4G / LTE network is launched. However, with the increasing integration of more electronic appliances to the wireless signal such as artificial intelligence; self-driving vehicles; the internet of things (IoT), there is a need for faster and more efficient network connectivity.

THE FIRST INTRODUCTION OF 5G
In the year 2018, the world was introduced to the 5G network in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea. This fifth generation of cellular network technology, 5G, is poised by the telecommunication industry to be the dominant network technology by the year 2025.

From the telecommunications point-of-view, there is a functional and financial reason to pave way for 5G networks as it allows bandwidth data to travel in larger quantities and at faster speeds. However, the insufficient test results on 5G led as many as 248 scientists from 42 nations to raise concerns about the potential biological impacts of next-generation 5G telecommunication technologies on plants, animals, and humans.

THE HASTY DEPLOYMENT OF 5G
Moreover, the rollout of 5G technologies has been hasty and rushed. Scientists and doctors appeal to the government and regulatory board to halt the 5G expansion until independent tests can assure that 5G and the total radiation levels caused will not be harmful to citizens. The 5G appeal also seeks to prevent the wireless industry from lobbying and persuading officials to make decisions about further propagation of RF radiation including 5G.

As test data on 5G effects requires years to collect, no one can be certain of the health effects 5G networks will cause to our human body and the environment.

How does 5G works?

To understand how 5G works, we'll need to look into Beamforming, Massive MIMO, and 5G Frequency Bands.

Beamforming

Beamforming is a key wireless technique that focuses a wireless signal in a specific direction. This means that wireless connections from 5G cell towers pinpoint and focus its transmission power towards your receiving device.

Massive MIMO

MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) is an antenna technology for wireless communications in which multiple antennas are used at both the 5G Cell Towers and your 5G phones. The key for 5G networks to expand and scale is through Massive MIMO, where 5G base stations are fitted with huge amounts of antennas to increase connectivity.

Combination to form 3D Beamforming

3D Beamforming is when Beamforming technology and Massive MIMO work closely together to direct beams of Radio Waves transmissions both horizontally and vertically toward user devices. This allows 5G cell towers to find any point in space, so a mobile user is always focused with a beam to their devices, even if they are moving through different levels in a building. Through 3D Beamforming, 5G networks can support up to one million devices per square mile.

5G Frequency Range

"The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength and the higher the energy of the wave."

5G uses millimetre waves (mmWave), which lies between the frequency range of 30–300 GHz, and is classified as "Extremely High Frequency". However, the most common 5G frequency range lies between "Ultra High Frequency" and "Super High Frequency".

Meanwhile, the current 4G LTE technology operates at a lower frequency – "Ultra High Frequency" (UHF) range of 300 – 2700 Mhz.

5G operates at a shorter wavelength, which means it can transmit data at a much faster speed compared to 4G, but within a much shorter range. 4G wavelengths have a range of about 10 miles whereas 5G wavelengths have a range of about 1,000 feet, not even 2% of 4G's range.

More 5G Towers, Closer to Our Homes

5G waves cannot travel far. They have a hard time penetrating thick dense surfaces, including concrete, walls, wood, dense trees, and sometimes even humid air.

Given its limited range, 5G Base Station and small 5G cell tower sites are built within close proximities (as close as 750 feet apart) across cities and towns to boosts its network. Soon, you would notice an abundance of antennas attached to the corner roof of every building, lamp posts, bus stops, and even close to your home.

5G Exposes you to more EMF Radiation

The millimeter waves transmitted from 5G Cell Stations – a form of EMF Radiation – are close to you. With a 5G Small Cell within every 750 feet, the antennas need to transmit at a power level range of 0.25 Watts to 120 Watts; 4G Cell Towers transmit at only 20 Watts, but they are up to 5 miles away.

As your device stays connected with 5G Cell Stations, the 3D Beamforming between the 5G network and your devices increases the exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR). While using cell phones close to our body–particularly when we talk on the phone–we willingly expose our brain to the EMF in the "Extremely High Frequency" range.

4G is not safe too

You do not need to use a 5G device to be exposed to the high levels of Electromagnetic Field (EMF). LTE Advanced Pro incorporates 5G technologies into its older network and starts to transmit beam-based coverage with the increasing number of 5G small cells supporting this network.

Currently, 5G networks operate on up to three frequency bands – low, mid, and high. The frequencies can be categorised into these range:
Low-band   : 600 -850 MHz (Ultra High Frequency)
Mid-band    :  2.5 - 3.7 GHz (Super High Frequency)
High-band   :  25 - 39 GHz (Extremely High Frequency)

The most common 5G frequencies would be between "Low-Band Frequency" and "Mid-Band Frequency".

With the increasing new technologies that embrace 5G–such as the new iPhones and Android phones–it is inevitable in our lifetime to prevent the use of 5G devices. We will be exposed to increasing levels of EMF Radiations.

The Effects of EMF Radiation

Some experience EMF sensitivity when exposed to EMF and include symptoms such as stinging or pricking sensations on the skin, chronic migraines, severe sleep disturbance or aches & pains over the body.

Prolonged exposure to EMF would cause harmful damage to our brains and our vital organs.

EMF Radiation to the Brain

When we use our phones close to our body, the brain's metabolic activity increases, indicating that the human brain is sensitive to the effects of EMF Radiation. An increase in brain metabolic activity leads to energy loss for optimal brain function and is linked to poorer attention and cognitive function.

EMF from cell phones disrupts the blood-brain barrier which is supposed to protect the brain against infections and maintain brain functions.

According to a 10-year Swedish study, researchers found that the use of cell phones for more than 10 years gives a consistent pattern of an increased risk for Acoustic Neuroma and Glioma.

Acoustic Neuroma

In an Italian lawsuit, two court-appointed doctors showed an increased risk of head tumours among those who talk on their phones for only 30 minutes a day over a 10-year period.

Glioma

CERENAT – a case-control study in France – reported an increased risk of gliomas with cumulative lifetime call duration.

EMF Health risk to body systems

Central Nervous System

Neurological effects in the Central Nervous System arise from the EMF exposure of cell phone use.

Immune System

Chronic exposure to EMFs disturb immune function and damages the biological processes of cell damage and causes oxidative stress which ultimately affects the immune system.

Endocrine System

Melatonin suppresses the development of certain tumours, has anticancer efficacy, and repairs cellular DNA damage. EMF exposure is sensed as a light source and subsequently decreases the natural melatonin production of the body.

Reproductive System

Research shows that EMF radiation correlates with higher miscarriage rates and birth defects in women. And in Men, EMF exposure induces accelerate death in healthy sperm cells and promote testicular cancer formation.

Safety of Current Cell Phones

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has not updated its cell phone safety standards since 1996, which was 25 years ago and 11 years before the first iPhone was invented.

Before the sale of any cell phone, all cell phone manufacturers are required to conduct SAR testing in labs and must comply with the standards set by government regulators. However, manufacturers are allowed to select the testing lab — and only a single phone needs to pass in order for millions of others to be sold.

An independent cell phone radiation test by the Chicago Tribune has revealed that popular cell phone models exceeded the exposure limit set by government regulators on safety for consumers.

In some of the tests, cell phones emit nearly double the EMF radiation of the exposure limit set by government regulations. This is worrying as the exposure is more apparent with phones placed closer to the body.

EMF Protection Starts Today

Selecting the right cell phone radiation shield is essential for EMF protection. Radiation shields such as antenna caps and cases interfere with signal reception and forces cell phones to transmit greater energy to connect, subsequently generating more EMF radiation.

Layered with ceramic minerals, DeviceShield employs Japanese Nanotechnology to create a slim aesthetic design that fits all cell phone models. It radiates far-infrared scalar energy and negative ions which neutralizes EMF radiation, acting as an EMF shield that does not interfere with phone signals at all.

DeviceShield has been tested & proven by USA accredited laboratory Keystone Compliance https://keystonecompliance.com/ and proven to provide 99% EMF shielding effectiveness of up to 10.525GHz which covers all low and mid bands of 5G.

In Conclusion

For those of us who live in urban areas, there is no escape from the Electromagnetic Radiation (EMF) beaming from the 5G network above and around us. As a society, should we invest hundreds of billions of dollars deploying 5G that requires the installation of millions or more new cell antenna sites where we live, work and play? Do we know of the health risks from exposing ourselves to Extremely High Frequency EMF?

We should continue to support the 5G appeal signed by 248 scientists and medical doctors that calls for the halt deployment on 5G and demand our government to fund the safety research needed to understand the safe exposure limits of our body and the environment.

What is EMF? (Electromagnetic Field)?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Electric fields are created when there is a difference in voltage, while magnetic fields are created when electric current flows.

Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as Electromagnetic Radiation.

As Electric Current and magnetic field are co-related, all electrical appliances under the electromagnetic spectrum (Radio Waves, Microwaves, Ionizing Radiation) that uses Electromagnetic Wave Frequencies produce Electromagnetic Radiation.

Electronic Radiation is associated with the use of electrical power and sources of Electromagnetic Radiation are from naturally occurring sources and human-made sources.

Sources of EMF

The two main sources of EMF are Natural Occurring and Human Made. With the advancement in modern technology, most of the EMF we are commonly exposed to, are from Human Made EMF.

Natural Occurring EMF

Thunderstorms are the most common naturally occurring source of EMF, which is the natural build-up of electric charges in the atmosphere. The compass in the needle always orients in a North-South direction due to the earth’s natural magnetic field. Birds and fish draw on the earth’s magnetic field as navigation when they migrate each year to find more food, pleasant weather, and the perfect place to breed.

Human Made EMF

EMF is generated whenever an electric current passing through an electronic circuit to perform a function. EMF is found in everyday electrical appliances such as microwave oven, televisions, computers – medical devices such as X rays, defibrillators – and prominently in telecommunications whereby high-frequency radio waves are used to transmit information via antennas, radio stations, and cell phones.

What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum?

Wavelength and frequency determine another important characteristic of electromagnetic fields. Frequencies with shorter wavelength carry more energy than frequencies with a longer wavelength. EMFs are grouped into two categories based on their frequency – Ionizing and Non-Ionizing.

Ionizing Radiation

EMF with short wavelengths carries so much energy capable of breaking bonds between molecules, causing potential harm for cellular and DNA damage. Examples of ionizing radiation can be found in X-rays used in medical therapy, Cosmic rays from the Sun, and Gamma Rays from radioactive decay. The public is warned of the dangers of Ionizing-Radiation and reduce exposure to such radiation as it’s a health hazard to the body.

It is only on a rare occasion we are exposed to ionizing radiation which falls on the far right of the electromagnetic spectrum. People usually do not frequently undergo X-Ray or CT Scans which exposes damage to DNA that can cause cancer.

Non-Ionizing Radiation

EMF with longer wavelengths are considered low-level radiation and generally perceived to be harmless to humans. We are more commonly exposed to the Low-Frequency Radiation of Microwaves and Radiowaves.

Commonly used in Telecommunications, Radiowaves are examples of Non-Ionizing Radiation. The energy from RadioFrequency (RF) antennas radiates into space through antennas as electromagnetic waves (radio waves), which are used to transmit data and information into a network of systems.

Microwave ovens channel electromagnetic waves in the form of heat energy which results in a quick and efficient way of heating up food molecules by radiation.

Although non-ionizing radiation is deemed safe, there are many levels to the frequency of the waves.

EMF Frequencies

We are more commonly exposed to the Low-Frequency Radiation of Microwaves and Radiowaves.

Extremely Low-Frequency (ELF) Radiation is considered to be harmless EMF (non-ionizing) as it belongs to the far-left of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Examples of such ELF are Light Bulbs and power cables with a frequency range of 3 to 30 Hz.

Cell Phones communicate by emitting EMF frequencies, similar to those used for radio and television broadcasts. Cell Phones with 4G network connectivity operate between 700Mhz and 2600Mhz, which falls in the range between "Very High Frequency" to “Ultra High Frequency” in the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are the most applauded breakthrough of modern times. It’s the perfect way to stay connected with others and comes with a sense of security in the event of an emergency.

Modern smartphones are capable of internet access, cellular calls, and come well equipped with GPS technology for navigation. The downside to cell phones is its reliance on network connectivity.

LTE 4G

LTE 4G (Long Term Evolution 4th Generation) is the most dominant broadband cellular network, all around the world. In North America, most voice, text, and calls are being handled over 4G networks. Even with the upcoming emergence of 5G network, it would mostly be used by phones to revolutionize download speed but would continue to use 4G networks for data uploads and cellular calls in the foreseeable future.

LTE 4G Network Frequency Band

The four main LTE bands in use in Canada right now are:

Most cell phones don't just connect to one frequency band – they use a combination of low (700Mhz) and high (AWS, or 2600Mhz) to ensure optimum coverage, speed, and location.

Cell Phone Radiation refers to the range of radiowave frequencies that Cell Phone use to communicate with Cellular towers.

The lower the frequency, the longer the signal can travel, but at a slower speed; The higher the frequency, the greater the potential throughput, but at an expense of distance and penetration.

Conclusion

Electromagnetic radiation can be absorbed by organisms, in which it causes a series of physiological and functional changes. Many intricate electrical activities occur in the central nervous system, including learning and memory, which are therefore vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation. By placing the head close to the cell phone during calls, the human brain is exposed to electromagnetic radiation.

Following the enormous increase in cell phone usage, concerns have been raised throughout decades by scientists and researchers to investigate adverse health risks associated with cell phone radiation.

WHO established the International Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Project in 1996 to assess the scientific evidence of possible adverse health effects from electromagnetic fields.

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reviewed the carcinogenic potential of radiofrequency fields from cell phones.

Exposure to the human-made Electromagnetic Field (EMF) is inevitable due to the advancement of science and technology. Technological growth is expected to continue; as such, the amount of EMF exposure will continue to increase steadily.

History of Cell Phones

The first phone call made on a handheld cellular phone was on April 3, 1973. Motorola’s Martin Cooper made the call using a prototype Motorola DynaTAC, in the midst of reporter's interview, at a 900-MHz base station on 6th Avenue in New York.

The first commercial telephone, Motorola DynaTAC, weighed at 784 g, and with the attachment of an external antenna, the phone measured at more than 14 inches. Motorola DynaTAC has a talk time of 30 minutes and a full recharge would take up to 10 hours.

As advancement in telecommunications continues to surge forward, cell phones shrunk in size, with antenna inbuilt within the phone. Equipped with powerful battery capacities, cell phones now support internet access, navigation, and call times of up to 48 hours.

How does a Cell Phone Work?

As Cell Phones communicate using radiowaves, the Electromagnetic Radiation from Cell Phone is imminent. We are going to take a look into how Cell Phones operate using EMF.

During a Cellular Call

1. During a phone call, the microphone in a cell phone converts your voice into a corresponding up-and-down pattern of electrical signals.

2. The microchip in cell phones then turns these signals into a string of numbers.

3. The numbers are packed up into a radiowaves and beamed out from the phone's antenna, in a form of electromagnetic radiation.

4. The waves are then picked up by a receiver in the nearest cell-phone tower, and sent to the recipient's cell phone antenna in the form of electromagnetic radiation, which is then converted into sound.

Cellular Internet Access

1. Similar to cellular calls, phones have an in-built antenna to send and receive packets of digital data packets with cell-phone towers.

2. The data packets are then sent to cellular towers with infrastructures that are connected to the internet.

3. The towers would then transmit back the data packets to cell phones.

4. The main component used in the transfer of data packets is Electromagnetic Field Radiofrequency (RF) energy. Transmission of information between cell phones and the cellular towers is only made possible with this RF energy that can pass through buildings and walls.

WIFI Internet Access

1. Modems are connected to the internet via a cable, with wireless routers relaying data packets back and forth between cellular phones and modems.

2. For Wifi connectivity, cell phones use a different antenna for Wifi connections. For cellular connectivity in LTE 4G, antennas are tuned into frequencies of 700Mhz, 1700Mhz and 2600 Mhz. Whereas with Wifi connectivity, antennas are tuned to frequency bands of 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz, making Wifi the highest frequencies operated by mobile devices.

3. Similarly, the transfer of data packets via Wifi is made possible through EMF Radio waves but uses a higher frequency as compared to cellular network connectivity.

EMF levels of Cell Phones

What is Cell Phone Radiation? Cell phones and other electronic appliances require EMF to function optimally. Cell phones communicate with telecommunication towers using radio waves with frequency ranging from 700 Mhz (Ultra High Frequency) to 2700 Mhz (Super High Frequency). Meanwhile, cellular phones connected to WIFI transmit radio waves frequencies of up to 5 GHz (Super High Frequency).

The wavelength of Radio Waves is bigger than light waves and has the ability to go through a wall. When talking on a cell phone, most users place the phone against the head. In this position, the brain tissues are vulnerable to the harmful effects of Cell Phone Electromagnetic Radiation.

Even though Radio waves are considered as non-ionizing radiation which is widely believed to be non-harmful, researchers and health organisations are keeping a close eye on the subject.

WHO established the International Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Project in 1996 to assess the scientific evidence of possible adverse health effects from electromagnetic fields, while the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reviewed the carcinogenic potential of radiofrequency fields from cell phones in 2011.

Some people experience Electromagnetic Sensitivity or Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity when exposed to Cell Phone Radiation and WIFI Radiation. Click on this link to learn more about EMF Exposure Symptoms.

Cell Phone Regulations

The harmful effects of the Electromagnetic Radiation emitted by cell phones are not to be taken lightly. What are cell phones manufacturers doing to make their product safe to be used by consumers?

SAR (Specific Absorption Rate)

SAR is the measure of RF (radiofrequency) energy absorbed by the body when exposed to EMF from a cell phone. Before the sale of any cell phones, all cell phone manufacturers are required to conduct SAR testing in labs and must comply with the standards set by government regulators. However, manufacturers are allowed to select the testing lab — and only a single phone needs to pass in order for millions of others to be sold.

The Federal Communications Commission requires cell phones to have a peak Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) measurement of lesser than 1.6 watts per kilogram.

However, an independent cell phone radiation test by the Chicago Tribune has revealed that popular cell phone models exceeded the exposure limit set by government regulators on safety for consumers.

In some of the tests, cell phones emit nearly double the radiofrequency radiation of the exposure limit set by government regulations. This is worrying as the exposure is more apparent with phones placed closer to the body. Nowadays, people often carry phones closer to the body that increases even more potential exposure to radiofrequency radiation.

Cell phones are designed to reach the network base station for connectivity. The closer the cell phone is to a station, the lower the SAR level. As a cell phone is further away from a station, it requires even more power to connect and emits an even higher SAR value which is dangerous to the human body.

Conclusion

Even though the EMF energy emitted by cell phones is non-ionizing and deemed as harmless, there have been concerns raised throughout decades by scientists and researchers to investigate adverse health risks associated with cell phone radiation.

High levels of EMF exposure can heat biological tissues and cause harm directly to vulnerable organs of the human body. While we are commonly not exposed to high levels of EMF such as UV, X-Ray, and Gamma rays, the exposure to low-level cellphone radiation over many years, potentially decades, has an underlying risk of tumours, heart disease, and even cancer.

To stay connected with each other, cell phones would predominantly remain a necessity in our lives. As the usage increases, the exposure to radiofrequency radiation increases as well.

Cell Phone Electromagnetic Radiation is imminent, and that's why we've compiled a list of safety tips on how to avoid Cell Phone Radiation and how to protect yourself from Electromagnetic Radiation.

SHARE

Introduction

Electromagnetic Field (EMF) is generated whenever an electric current passes through; it is found in electronic appliances such as Televisions, Radios, Microwaves, Cell Phones, and etc. With continuous exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation, some individuals might experience Electromagnetic Sensitivity such as headaches, migraines, and other symptoms. As it is difficult to pinpoint the sources of such symptoms, DeviceShield has compiled a list of safety tips that help reduce unnecessary exposure to EMF Radiation.

Text more, Talk less

Radiations from Cell Phones are imminent as it uses radiowaves to remain connected. Cell phones emit less EMF Radiation when sending text rather than voice communications. As much as possible, communicate using text and voice messages. At a typical texting distance, EMF exposure from phones with weak signal strength decreased by 90% over a near-ear distance.

If there is an urgency to call, use a corded landline telephone instead. DO NOT use a cordless landline phone as the phone bases constantly emit microwave radiation.

Call when the Signal is Strong

Fewer signal bars mean the cell phone must try harder to broadcast its signal. Research shows that radiation exposure increases dramatically when cell phone signals are weak. EMF exposure from cell phones with weak signal reception (1-2 display bars) was found to be greater than phones with strong signal reception (4–5 display bars), by up to four orders of magnitude.

Avoid using Cell phones or Wifi devices in Moving Vehicles

Power off any Wifi connectivity when in a moving vehicle such as a car, bus or train. Cell phones, streaming tablets and laptops emit higher EMF Radiation during travel as the devices work harder to get a signal through metal.

Keep wireless gadgets away from the body

EMF Radiowaves from Cell Phones has the ability to penetrate through a wall. Most cell phone users place the phone against the head when on call, leaving vulnerable brain tissues exposed to the harmful effects of EMF Radiation. The amount of EMF Radiation absorbed by your head and body decreases dramatically with even a small distance. Use Speaker Mode or connect to a wired headset whenever possible.

Be mindful that EMF exposure includes computer radiation. Laptops and tablets are to be used on tables and NOT on laps.

Is WIFI bad for you?

WIFI provides stable internet connectivity and at a relatively fast speed. Compared to cellular network connectivity, WIFI uses a higher radiowave frequency of 2.4 Ghz & 5 Ghz. Is WIFI dangerous as the router constantly emits EMF Radiowaves to its surroundings?

If we would want to reduce EMF exposure in the household, the first thing we ought to do is to place the Router and Modem further from the commonly used area. Without sacrificing stable internet connection, remain connected using an Ethernet Cable (wired internet connection for computers). When not in use, power off the router.

Not in use

Even when on standby mode, cell phones are still connected to either cellular or Wifi connection, and still emits high EMF Radiation levels. Therefore, it is recommended not to put the phone in the pocket or close to the body.

All smart cell phones come equipped with an Airplane Mode that disables wireless transmission cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth functions. Research shows that sleep is disturbed by EMF radiation from cell phones. Before going to bed, switch on Airplane Mode and place your phone away from your bed. The alarm clock function would still work even on Airplane Mode. Remove all electronics and wireless devices from around your bed to safeguard your sleep. Be sure to charge cell phones and tech devices outside the bedroom.

Limit Children Usage

Children are most vulnerable to wireless EMF Radiation. EMF from cell phones penetrates deeper into their small heads, thinner skulls and higher brain conductivity, causing them to absorb twice as much cell phone radiation. Children should be allowed to use cell phones or any wireless gadgets as little as possible as their brains are still developing. You have got to protect the ones you love.

Choosing the Right Radiation Shield

Selecting the right cell phone radiation shield is essential for EMF protection. Radiation shields such as antenna caps and cases interfere with signal reception and forces cell phones to transmit greater energy to connect, subsequently generating more EMF radiation.

Layered with ceramic minerals, DeviceShield employs Japanese Nanotechnology to create a slim aesthetic design that fits all cell phone models. It radiates far-infrared scalar energy and negative ions which neutralizes EMF radiation, acting as an EMF shield. DeviceShield has been proven to provide EMF shielding from harmful cell phone radiation of up to 99% and does not interfere with the phone signals at all.

DeviceShield does not interfere with phone signals at all.

Foods that Fight EMF

Diet can play a key role in strengthening your antioxidant capacity by increasing your intake of foods that have protectant capabilities against EMFs.

As EMF exposure triggers oxidative stress in the body, various antioxidants such as Vitamin E, Melatonin, and Folic Acid may be used to prevent the potential adverse effects of exposure to EMF.

Even though the suggested food can help your body in damage control due to exposure to EMF radiation, emphasis should be on protection and shielding rather than from the root cause of EMF.

Conclusion

As technology advances, we are surrounded more and more by EMF in our daily lives. It will be impossible to completely avoid EMF Radiation but we can minimise our exposure to it. We have to be mindful of its dangers and keep ourselves and our family safe as much as possible.

Introduction

Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Radiation is classified as being either ionizing or non-ionizing. Even though Radio Waves are classified under Non-ionizing EMF Radiation and perceived to be non-harmful – when Cell phones are placed against the head – vulnerable brain tissues are exposed to the potentially harmful effects of EMF.

How does EMF Radiation affect the Brain?

Cell phones emit radiofrequency radiation (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas. These radio waves have sufficient energy that can pass through buildings and walls, and can be absorbed by the body when being exposed.

By placing the head close to the phone during cellular calls, the close proximity of EMF Cell Phone radiation affects the brain. Not only does the EMF exposure cause heating to the area of the body where the cell phone is held, but also could cause detrimental effects to the brain.

The Human Brain

The human brain is the command centre for the human nervous system. It receives signals from the body's sensory organs and outputs information to the muscles.

The brain controls our thoughts, memory and speech, movement of the arms and legs, and the function of many organs within our body.

Effects of EMF on brain activity

Brain Glucose Metabolism

Glucose (Sugar) is the major oxidative fuel for the brain. Rich in nerve cells and neurons – the brain is the most energy-demanding organ – using one-half of all the sugar energy in the body.

A study was conducted by Dr Nora Volkow from the National Institutes of Health, to evaluate cell phone usage on brain metabolism. It was concluded that "50-minute cell phone exposure was associated with increased brain glucose metabolism in the region closest to the antenna".

The 7% increase in metabolic activity during the cellular call provides evidence that the human brain is sensitive to the effects of EMF Radiation from acute cell phone exposures.

High metabolic activity in the brain leads to loss of energy for optimal brain function and is linked to poor attention and cognitive function. Furthermore, the human brain’s evident sensitivity to the phone’s electromagnetic waves does raise further questions.

Blood-Brain Barrier

Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) has a function to protect against circulating toxins or pathogens that could cause brain infections, while at the same time allowing vital nutrients to reach the brain, and help maintain relatively constant levels of hormones, nutrients and water in the brain.

Radiowaves from Cell Phone Radiation combined with the heat generated when placed against the head affects brain activity by disrupting the blood-brain barrier.

Exposure to levels of EMF radiowaves that increase brain temperature by more than 1 °C can increase the permeability of the BBB.

A defective Blood-Brain Barrier allows white blood cells to infiltrate the brain and attack the functions of neurons sending signals from one brain cell to another.

Dysfunction of the Blood-Brain-Barrier is associated with Alzheimer's disease, anxiety and depression, Brain abscess, Meningitis, and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Melatonin – The Sleep Hormone

Hormones relay important messages within the brain, and between the brain and body. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, which plays a significant role in physiological functions and regulates the body's sleep-wake cycle.

There is evidence that melatonin suppresses the development of certain tumours and has anticancer efficacy. Melatonin is preventive against oxidation disorders of nerve cells, detoxifies carcinogens, protects and repairs cellular DNA damage.

A study found that even non-ionizing EMF radiation that is extremely low-frequency (ELF) – such as power lines, electrical wiring, and basic household appliances – could cause cancer through other mechanisms, such as reducing the levels of the hormone melatonin.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) has significant disruption on Pineal Melatonin levels by sensing EMF as a light source and subsequently decreases the melatonin production of the human body.

Apart from the blue light emitted by electronic screens, EMF emitted from Cell Phones in the form of radio waves act as a suppressor of melatonin production.

Brain Tumour

Exposure to EMF radiation from Cell Phones usage affects brain activity, while long-term exposure could lead to other adverse effects such as abnormal growth of tissue in the brain.

A brain tumour is a mass or growth of abnormal cells in the brain that can disrupt proper brain function. Some brain tumours are benign (noncancerous), while some are malignant (cancerous).

Doctors identified the two main risk factors for brain tumour: exposure to radiation and family history of brain tumours.

The brain is the main target organ for radiation exposure during cell phone usage. Sweden researchers conducted a 10-year study on finding the correlation between phone exposure and brain tumours.

Coordinating with Sweden's Cancer Registries and the National Population Registry to conduct the research, it was found that all types of phone (cordless, analogue, digital, and cell phone) increases the risk of acoustic neuroma in the brain.

In the series of studies on tumour risk associated with the use of mobile or cordless telephones, it is found that there was an increased risk for brain tumours, mainly acoustic neuroma and malignant brain tumours.

Furthermore, the use of cell phones for more than 10 years gives a consistent pattern of an increased risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma.

Acoustic Neuromas

Acoustic Neuromas are benign brain tumours that develop on the nerves that control balance and hearing leading from the inner ear to the brain. A slow-growing benign tumour, Acoustic Neuromas may take up to 5 years from the first symptom to diagnosis.

A News Article from the Guardian reported that an Italian court has ruled that prolonged use of mobile phones can cause head tumours despite scientists overwhelmingly agreeing there is no evidence to back this up.

Roberto Romeo, who worked for Telecom Italia, used his phone for four to five hours a day. As a result, he developed Acoustic Neuroma – a benign but disabling tumour.

The court decision was based on studies provided by two court-appointed doctors that showed an increased risk of head tumours among those who talked on their phones for 30 minutes a day over a 10-year period.

Studies found that there is an increased risk of acoustic neuroma for mobile phone use of at least 10 years duration. The observed association was strongest for tumours on the same side of the head as the phone was normally used.

Glioma

Glioma tumour begins in the brain or spinal cord and is considered malignant (dangerous). A Glioma can affect brain function and be life-threatening depending on its location and rate of growth.

CERENAT was a case-control study conducted across four areas of France between 2004 and 2006, which looked at the association between cell phone use and tumours of the brain. It was reported that there was an increased risk of gliomas with an increase in cumulative lifetime call duration – the longer you use cell phones, the higher risk of developing brain tumours.

A meta-analysis on Mobile phones and head tumours gather studies on cell phone users of more than 10 years. Significant data shows an almost doubling of the risk of head tumours induced by long-term cell phone use.

Among the literature data examined is a study conducted by Dr Lennart Hardell, an oncologist from University Hospital in Orebro, Sweden. Hardell concludes that the odds of developing glioma, an often deadly brain cancer, rose with years and hours of use, and the risk is three times higher after 25 years of use. Children may be most vulnerable to cell phone emissions as they have smaller heads, thinner skulls, and higher brain conductivity which absorbs more radiofrequency electromagnetic fields

A systematic review from China has revealed an association of the increased risk of Gliomas among long-term Cell Phone users of more than 10 years. As tumours may take up to years to manifest, long term cell phone users are exposed to the risk.

Conclusion

Do Cell Phone Cause Brain Cancer? As this topic is a serious issue, many scientists are still researching and debating to find a correlation.

The mobile technology connects the world more than ever and the telecommunication industry race against each other to provide faster wireless data transmissions but unfortunately, there are also risks of inevitable exposure to EMF radiation to the human brain that comes along with technology.  Continued research is needed to find a solution on how these possible effects can be neutralized or at least reduced.

First Cell Phone

Introduction

The introduction of cell phones has been less than 4 decades since Dyna TAC 8000X, the first phone small enough to be carried, that was first introduced by Motorola in 1983.

Advancement in Telecommunications has prompted higher EMF frequencies to be used for cellular connection. For example, the first standard cellular connection used radio waves around the range of 800 MHz frequency band, whereas LTE (4G) connection uses a range between 700Mhz and 2600Mhz, which falls in the range between "Very High Frequency" to “Ultra High Frequency” in the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Cell phones use EMF radiation in the microwave range, which to some extent may be harmful to human health. As a result of an exponential increase in cell phone usage worldwide, the effect of cell phone radiation on human health has become the subject of recent public interest and study.

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS)

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity

The “Microwave Syndrome” was coined in the year 1970, when military personnel who worked on radio and radar equipment showed EMF Exposure Symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, headaches, problems with memory and concentration, and sleep disturbances.

Most sufferers find that they react to EMF frequency ranges differently, such as radio waves (Rf) (Cell Phones and Wifi) and microwaves. Some of them may find their EMF symptoms gradually gets worse and lasts for longer periods as they are exposed to more and more EMF Radiation triggers.

Since then, the term has slowly evolved into Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) for users who have symptoms attributed to exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF).

Some of the symptoms of EHS include:

Individuals affected by multiple EMF exposures may experience EMF Sensitivity and find it difficult to pinpoint the source of their exposure. Since symptoms often improved when the trigger is removed, sufferers can find it helpful to unplug appliances and switch off lightings and electrical circuits to see if it relieves symptoms from occurring.

Only countries such as Austria have guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of EMF-related health problems. A Study has suggested to World Health Organization (WHO) to include Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and accept it as an EMF health risks and problem.

EMF Headaches & Migraines

EMF Headaches & Migraines

Migraine is one of the most common causes of headaches that affect daily performance capabilities and function. Most researchers believe that RF-EMF causes disturbance in the neuro-electrical activity related to brain cells, and mark EMF as a probable environmental trigger for migraine headaches.

As cell phones are directly held close to the head, the EMF exposure emitting from phones causes a disturbance in brain function. A cohort study indicates that the number and severity of migraine EMF headaches were correlated significantly with the increased use of cell phones.

EMF affects the Blood Brain Barrier

The blood-brain barrier is the barrier between the brain’s blood vessels (capillaries) and cells of other components that make up the brain tissue.

Research data indicated that the Blood-brain barrier breaks down when exposed to EMF from cell phones, and the thinning of the blood-brain barrier’s permeability is associated with headaches.

In a study performed on 114 patients migraine patients, the number and severity of migraine headaches were correlated significantly with the increased exposure to cell phone radiation and WIFI radiation.

With each minute of cellular phone usage, the possibility of a moderate headache and the number of migraine attacks increases by 0.2%, with an increased chance of severity level of 0.1%.

The findings of related EMF headaches could be the canary in the coal mine, warning of even more severe biologically significant effects. It is recommended that patients with migraine headaches restrict using cell phones and WIFI and replace them with land-line telephones for their daily telecommunications.

Stress

EMF related Stress

Stress is the body's reaction to harmful situations -- whether they’re real or perceived. When you feel threatened, a chemical reaction occurs in your body that allows you to act in a way to prevent injury. This reaction is known as "fight-or-flight,” or the stress response.

Stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behaviour. Stress could manifest to anxiety and depression. While stress is a response to a threat in a situation, anxiety is a reaction to the stress. People who are anxious often feel fear, worry, or unease and might be unable to identify the significant stressors in their life.

In this study, rats exposed to EMF radiation were in a stressful state. They ate and drank less than average, resulting in a smaller gain in body weight.

Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) is inevitable in some occupational sectors. This scientific review investigated the effect of chronic exposure to extremely-low-frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (EMF) on 275 power plant workers and suggests that long-term occupational exposure to EMF radiation may lead to stress, anxiety, poor sleep quality, and even depression.

Insomnia

EMF related Insomnia

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the brain’s pineal gland, that helps regulate sleep cycles because sleep and mood are closely connected, healthy melatonin levels can alleviate stress.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) has significant disruption on Pineal Melatonin levels by sensing EMF as a light source and subsequently decreases the melatonin production of the human body.

Apart from the blue light emitted by electronic screens, EMF Cell Phone radiation in the form of radio waves also acts as a suppressor of melatonin production.

For a night of good sleep, abstain from using the cell phone or any devices before bedtime. The absence of blue light and EMF radiation help you fall asleep faster and better.

Conclusion

To stay connected with each other, cell phones would predominantly remain a necessity in our lives. As the usage increases, the exposure to EMF radiation increases as well.

Given that EMF from cell phones in the form of radio waves have penetrating capabilities that go through walls, holding cell phones close to the head is dangerous as the fragile human brain is exposed to such EMF radiation risks.

A precautionary approach should be applied to save ourselves from undue exposure to EMF so that all these EMF symptoms can be avoided to the greatest degree possible.

Introduction

Dependency on cell phones is growing at an alarming pace in our world of wireless technology and the debate on the biological effects of exposure to cell phone EMF radiation has become a topic of interest for scientific research.

Central Nervous System

EMF impact on the Central Nervous System

The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord carries signals back and forth between the brain and nerves and controls most functions of the body and mind.

This study sets out to find a possible link between exposure of cell phone radiation and central nervous system disorders. Statistically significant data of vertigo, dizziness, and headaches were found to be associated with cell phone use.

Another journal study by South Korean researchers compiled the collective assumptions of EMF health effects to the Central Nervous System. Various neurological effects may arise as a result of RF-EMF exposure due to the proximity of the cranial nervous system (nerves that emerge directly from the brain) during cellular phone use. Such effects of EMF on health include headaches, changes in sleep habits, and changes in blood pressure. Moreover, exposure to RadioFrequency EMFs might affect cognitive function such as spatial learning and memory loss in humans.

EMF Headaches

When Cell phones are placed against the head – vulnerable brain tissues are exposed to the potentially harmful effects of EMF. The EMF frequencies emitted by cell phones are absorbed into the brain to such an extent that it can affect the activity of neurons.

Glucose as the oxidative fuel for the brain

Glucose (Sugar) is the major oxidative fuel for the brain. Rich in nerve cells and neurons – the brain is the most energy-demanding organ – using one-half of all the sugar energy in the body.

A study conducted by Dr Nora Volkow from the National Institutes of Health found that Glucose metabolism in the brain that was exposed to RF-EMF increased rapidly, indicating that the brain is sensitive to the effects of RF-EMF exposure.

Immune System

EMF impact on the Immune System

The immune system is the body's defence system, comprising of many biological structures and processes that protect against diseases. An immune response is triggered to defend against foreign pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi, which could cause diseases and serious problems to the body.

EMFs disturb immune function through stimulation of various allergic and inflammatory responses, as well as effects on tissue repair processes. Chronic exposure of EMF radiation damages the biological processes of cell damage and oxidative stress, DNA fragmentation, and neurological changes, which will ultimately affect the immune system.

The antioxidant defence system controls the formation of free radicals and prevents diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease and macular degeneration.

EMF causes Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. This report demonstrates that EMF exposure triggers oxidative stress in various tissues and causes significant changes in levels of blood antioxidant markers. It was also suggested that various antioxidants such as vitamin E, Melatonin, and Folic Acid may be used to prevent the potential adverse effects of exposure to EMF.

Endocrine System

EMF impact on the Endocrine System

The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulates a variety of bodily functions such as metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things. It is made up of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, and reproductive system in both sexes.

Importance of Melatonin

Even though studies on EMF health effects on the endocrine system are scarce, however, there have been a number of researches that concur the impact of EMF radiation on Pineal Melatonin levels. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, which plays a significant role in physiological functions and regulates the body's sleep-wake cycle.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) has significant disruption on Pineal Melatonin levels by sensing EMF as a light source and subsequently decreases the melatonin production of the human body.

There is evidence that melatonin suppresses the development of certain tumours and has anticancer efficacy. Melatonin is preventive against oxidation disorders of nerve cells, detoxifies carcinogens, protects and repairs cellular DNA damage. Therefore, Melatonin is highly regarded for the prevention and treatment of cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer.

Reproductive System

EMF impact on the Reproductive System

The reproductive system is the genital system made up of all the anatomical organs involved in sexual reproduction. Cell Phones are usually kept in the pockets, leaving our reproductive system continuously exposed to the EMF radiation emitted by cell phones.

Female

EMF impact on the Ovaries

In the ovaries of the female reproductive system, an ovarian follicle is a fluid-filled sac that contains an immature egg, or oocyte. These follicles are found in the ovaries. During ovulation, a mature egg is released from a follicle.

The following two studies on female rats associate infertility with EMF exposure. The first study on female rats, there was a significant decrease in the number of ovarian follicles in rats exposed to Electromagnetic radiation. While the second study shows that EMF radiation increased the harmful effects on the formation of ovarian follicles and oocytes implantation, resulting in decreased ovarian reserve leading to infertility.

A study paper compiled various scientific researches and journals on this topic and concluded that EMF exposure alters the reproductive endocrine hormones, gonadal function, embryonic development, pregnancy, and fetal development.

Many women are exposed to different types of radiation either to everyday life (e.g. televisions, cell phones, computer devices, occupational equipment) or for medical diagnostic and therapy with exposure to ionizing EMF radiation made of charged particles, X-rays, and gamma-rays.

Impact of EMF on Birth Defects

Cell phones emit radiofrequency radiation (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas. This research shows that non-ionizing EMF radiation correlates with higher miscarriage rates and birth defects.

Abortion rate and an increased number of birth defects have been found with non-ionizing EMF exposure to video display terminals (computer screens).

Male

Environmental, health, and lifestyle are among the factors that contribute to infertility in men. Many studies and researches have been done to clearly show that radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) have damaging effects on sperm (Apoptosis, morphology, motility, and sperm count)

Impact of EMF on Sperm Cells

This Study concludes that EMF radiation induces oxidative stress which may lead to infertility and that EMF exposure negatively affects sperm quality.

Aside from infertility, it was assumed that RF-EMF exposure might induce DNA damage due to increased oxidative stress, which may accelerate death in healthy sperm cells and promote testicular cancer formation.

With regards to male hormones, Testosterone is essential for spermatogenesis, the formation of development of sperm cells in men. In a controlled study on animals, it was found that EMF exposure results in a decline in the level of testosterone. Low levels of testosterone result in poor sexual health, difficulty sleeping, decrease in energy levels, and changes in mood swings.

Conclusion

Many studies have proven that there are serious effects of EMF exposure on the human body. However, due to the non-standardization of EMF variables, there may be some controversies. Nonetheless, these potential EMF health risks should be made known to the public.

Introduction

We are commonly exposed to EMF Radiation from our electronic devices transmitting radiowaves – such as cellular connectivity on our phones and WIFI connectivity on computers and laptops.

Men are more often exposed to higher levels of EMF radiation in their occupation, as most are employed to work technical jobs such as an electrician, Welders, Machinery operators. While desk jobs such as Sales, Marketing – jobs that require constant communication – EMF exposure are equally apparent, as the phones are directly placed against the head.

Occupational Exposure to EMF

Headaches & Migraines caused by EMF

Migraine is described as a throbbing pain on 1 side of the head, and a severe form of headache. Sufferers experienced symptoms of feeling sick, accompanied by an increased sensitivity to light or sound.

A study found that the increase of cell phone usage had a significant effect on the number of moderate headaches & migraine attacks, and the severity of a headache. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with migraine headaches restrict using cell phones and Wi-Fi, and replace them with a fixed-line telephone for daily telecommunications.

Brain Tumour

Studies found that there is an increased risk of acoustic neuroma – a form of benign brain tumour – with mobile phone use of at least 10 years duration. Roberto Romeo, who worked for Telecom Italia, used his phone to coordinate with other technicians in the company. He used his cell phone for up to four to five hours a day over a 15-year period. As a result, he developed Acoustic Neuroma. Italian Court ordered INAIL, a workplace accident insurance agency, to compensate Romeo for the damage caused.

To reduce the risk of head tumours induced by long-term Cell Phone use, or Migraine Headaches from Cell Phone use, consider using DeviceShield as a Cell Phone radiation protection, and to use wired headphones instead of placing the phone directly against your head when in use.

EMF on Mental Wellbeing

Men are typically employed to work with electricity and machinery, exposing the body to EMF radiation in the workplace. A prolonged period of EMF exposure places the body into a state of chronic stress, affecting mental wellbeing. A study on Psychological Effects of Occupational Exposure to EMF found that men exposed to workplace EMF have increased indications of diagnosed mental disorders and several depressive disorder symptoms, such as depression, paranoia, psychosis, interpersonal sensitivity, somatization, anxiety, and hostility.

EMF on the Heart & Blood

The heart pumps through an electrical system that controls the timing of the heartbeat by sending an electrical signal. As EMF is a magnetic field, it causes interference through dysregulation of the autonomic control of the heart circulatory system.

A study on healthy men aged 28-49 years, found that occupational EMF exposure results in changes in the circadian rhythms of blood pressure and heart rate. Workers who are exposed to higher intensities of EMF have an even more pronounced effect on the heart.

Long-term exposure of EMF on healthy men who worked in high voltage substations and those who live nearby power lines have biological modifications on their blood chemistry (sodium, chloride, phosphorus, glucose).

Cell Death, Tumour, and Cancers

Men working as welders and related machinery have considerable exposure to EMF.

Micronuclei (MN) are extra-nuclear bodies that contain damaged chromosome fragments. Welders who have constant exposure to EMF showed a significantly higher frequency of Micronuclei (MN) which translates to cell death, genomic instability, and even cancer development.

The genotoxic effects of long-term occupational exposure to EMF were investigated in this study on 102 plant workers working in different sections of a power plant. It was found that long-term occupational exposure to high levels of EMF results in a significant increase in DNA damage and later apoptosis (programmed cell death, or “cellular suicide.”)

Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is a natural way of removing aged cells from the body. However, the dying cell would in turn damage surrounding cells, potentially threatening to the healthy "neighbours" of a dying cell. Therefore, an increased response of Apoptosis could potentially drive tumour formation, promote tumour development, and shapes cancer.

A Cellphone Radio Frequency Radiation Studies by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) on rats found that EMF was associated with cancer development. There was clear evidence of malignant tumours in the hearts of male rats, some evidence of malignant tumours in the brains of male rats, and tumours in the adrenal glands of male rats. The NTP scientists are unsure why male rats appear to be at greater risk for developing tumours compared to female rats.

Leukaemia and Lymphoma are two types of cancer that affect white blood cells. Leukemias affects the blood and bone marrow while Lymphomas tend to affect the lymph nodes. A Netherlands Cohort Study on Men & Women age 55–69 years found that groups of Men, who have occupational exposure to EMF, have a significant association with Leukemia and Lymphoma.

Infertility & the Male Reproductive System

Men usually carry phones right in the pockets of their trousers, leaving the reproductive organs exposed to cell phone EMF radiation.

Environmental, health, and lifestyle are among the factors that contribute to infertility in men. Compiled studies and researches have undisputably found that the radiofrequency from Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) have damaging effects on the Sperm’s Apoptosis, Morphology, Motility, and Count. The source of EMF exposure on infertility includes radiation from Cell Phones, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Wi-Fi-connected laptops.

Aside from infertility, RF-EMF exposure might induce DNA damage due to increased oxidative stress, which may accelerate death in healthy sperm cells and promote testicular cancer formation.

With regards to male hormones, a controlled study on animals found that EMF exposure results in a decrease in the level of testosterone. Low levels of testosterone result in poor sexual health, difficulty sleeping, decrease in energy levels, and changes in mood swings.

Conclusion

EMF radiation exposes us to many adverse effects on the body, and the repercussion is cumulative, growing more severe with time. While EMF exposure is inevitable especially in the job environment, we could raise awareness of this as an occupational health concern to and try to reduce unnecessary EMF exposure on the job settings. As a precaution, men are advised to keep their phones away from their body or use Deviceshield, which acts as a cell phone radiation shield to reduce exposure to EMF radiation.

Introduction

The traditional roles of women at home and men in the workplace have shifted. Women are working more than ever, and yet they still take on most household responsibilities. Women most often are the ones who adjust their schedules and make compromises to balance career and family needs. While women are at work, are they exposed to EMF?

EMF Radiation from WIFI & Cell Phones

Exposure to EMF is everywhere, be it in the form of wifi radiation or cell phone radiation. Long-term exposure to EMF radiations has adverse health risks on the body, particularly at the area of exposure. When Cell Phones are pressed against the head during a call, the EMF radiation is absorbed by the head region. While the reproductive organs are exposed to radiation when laptops are placed directly above the lap.

While the EMF effects on the body may be the same for both men and women, the research found that the effects of EMF radiation may impact women differently.

A 40-year Swedish study on men, women, and children aged 0-80 years was conducted to investigate the correlation of RadioFrequency EMF and thyroid cancer. It was found that exposure to EMF radiation from the daily use of cell phone and cordless phone results in an increased case of thyroid cancer – and is statistically more significant in women. The Thyroid Cancer cases are further increased in a more recent study.

Gender-specific EMF effects are further carried with a study on heart rate & sleep in healthy men and women aged 40-60 years. Older Women, not Men, exposed to EMF had disrupted sleep and showed a decrease of time in REM Sleep – deep sleep that is essential for all to feel rested and stay healthy.

Women at Work

Many women are working in jobs, be it full-time or part-time, that requires using Computers, Phones, and Tablets. EMF exposure to Wifi Radiation and Cell Phone Radiation is inevitable as most of the job scope varies from Communication, Writers, to Sales and Marketing – the job requires portable electronic devices.

Migraine & Symptoms of EMF

A migraine is a severe form of painful headache accompanied by throbbing pain and symptoms of nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light or sound. Women are more prone to get Migraines compared to men, around 1 in every 5 women (20%) and around 1 in every 15 men (6%).

By placing the Cell Phones against the head during calls, the vulnerable brain is exposed to EMF radiation. A study on 114 patients with migraine found that reports of headaches and severe migraines stem from Cell Phone and Wi-Fi devices usage. The number and severity of migraine headaches significantly increased with the use of cell phones during the day and Wi-Fi use per week. It was recommended that the patients limit cell phone use and use the fixed-line telephone for their daily telecommunications instead. No recommendation was suggested for Computers/Laptops use as there is no substitute for such devices.

Brain Tumour

Apart from migraines and headaches, EMF radiation affects brain activity. Long-term exposure to EMF could lead to other adverse effects such as an abnormal growth of tissue in the brain (Tumour).

As a result, he developed the Brain Tumour. Italian Court ordered INAIL, a workplace accident insurance agency, to compensate Romeo for the damage caused.

To reduce the risk of head tumours or Migraine Headaches induced by long-term Cell Phone use, consider using DeviceShield as a Cell Phone radiation protection, and to use wired headphones instead of placing the phone directly against your head when in use.

Where do you keep your phones?

Where you keep your Cell Phones when not in use also plays a role in mitigating the risk effects caused by EMF radiation.

In Australia, a 2017 survey found that 15% of women tucked their phones in their bra against the breast, with 33% of them below the age of 20 years old. In case reports compiled in a study of Prolonged Contact between Breasts and Cellular Phones, raises the concern of a possible association of Multifocal Breast Cancer (multiple tumours arise in the same area of the breast) with EMF exposures from Cell Phones.

Breast Cancer from EMF

Case #1
A 33-year-old Female routinely places her Cell Phone in her bra when she goes jogging 3-4 times per week. She uses the GPS (Global Positioning System) on her Cell Phone to determine her location while jogging. Breast Imaging revealed a cluster of tumour growth in her breast, directly under the contact area of her Cell Phone.

Case #2
Another 21-year-old female keeps her Cell Phone in her bra for eight hours a day or longer for the past six years. MRI scan reveals an abnormal growth on her left breast, in the area where her Cell Phone was kept in direct contact with her left breast.

Case #3
A 21-year-old female keeps her Cell Phone tucked into her bra on the left side for several hours each day. She presented a spontaneous bloody discharge on her left nipple and was diagnosed with Breast cancer.

Case #4
A 39-year-old female uses her Cell Phone in her bra while commuting, using a Bluetooth device to talk for hours each day for the past ten years. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, with noticeable tumour growth in her right breast, around the area of Cell Phone contact.

Each of these patients had Multifocal Breast Cancer, but the Tumours were all clustered within the area of breast tissue directly at the Cell Phone contact, nowhere else. Highlighting Case #2 and #3, the case study raised concern on young Females who are undergoing puberty, as their breasts tissue are still growing and dividing, and are particularly vulnerable to EMF Radiation from Cell Phones.

Infertility

A 2018 study paper indicated that the effect of Non-Ionizing EMF (Cell Phones & Computer Devices) appears to correlate with higher miscarriage rates and birth defects. Many women are exposed to Ionizing EMF both for Diagnostic (such as Radiotherapy & X-ray imaging) and Therapeutic reasons. Radiation therapy may induce long-term side effects that impair the reproductive organs and hormonal regulation.

EMF exposure was found to inhibit fertility by altering the reproductive hormones, function, fetal development, and pregnancy. An increased number of birth defects and natural abortions in pregnant women working in offices was revealed in a study indicating a high possibility that EMF exposure from a computer monitor can negatively affect human reproduction.

Pregnancy

A fetal at the womb is vulnerable to environmental hazards, toxins, and unhealthy habits – and the effects might persist from infant till adulthood. Pregnant mothers have to abstain from toxins such as alcohol and coffee and environmental hazards such as EMF radiation exposure.

913 pregnant women from Northern California participated in a study to investigate health risks linked to EMF exposure. Pregnant women exposed to EMF was found to have a significantly higher rate of miscarriage compared to other women who were not exposed. The study hopes to further investigate the adverse biological impact of EMF from everyday exposure (Electrical Appliances, Wireless Networks & Devices) on human health, including the health of pregnant women.

A test on pregnant mice found that exposure to high temperatures caused by EMF exposure induces impaired learning and memory in newborns. At the early stage of pregnancy, higher levels of EMF Radiation at the microwave spectrum led to neurobehavioral disorders and behavioural alterations that persisted into adulthood. The increasing rate of behavioural disorders in children may be, at least in part, due to the microwave EMF radiation exposure at the womb.

Using Cell Phones & Other wireless Devices around your Child

The journey from a fragile newborn to an active child is filled with anxiety, especially for first-time mothers. Most of you would know the do and don't for a safe pregnancy, here is our list of tips to reduce EMF exposure to your newborn baby.

  1. Avoid placing devices such as Cell Phones, Computers, Laptops near the belly when pregnant. The use of devices directly near the womb has been linked to adverse health effects from prenatal exposure to radiation.
  2. Abstain from using electronic devices near your child, be it during breastfeeding or playtime. It’s okay to take pictures of your child but place the phone away once you are done. If you are using the phone for a video call, place the phone at least one foot away from your child to reduce radiation from EMF exposure.
  3. Switch on Airplane mode if you were to keep devices near your child. Keep your child away from electronic devices that are switched on.

Conclusion

Women living in this modern society balance careers with family life, and various kind of EMF exposure is inevitable during household and occupational activities. However, we could exercise certain precautions such as limiting device usage, or use safely with DeviceShield – an innovative Japanese Nanotechnology product to reduce EMF radiation from Cordless & Cell Phones, Tablets, and Laptops.
